LOUIVILLE, Kentucky — The Bellarmine College women’s basketball team welcomes Kennesaw State University to the ASUN Home Opener at Freedom Hall on Saturday at 1:00 PM ET.
Bellarmine (4-11, 0-2 ASUN) and Kennesaw State (5-8, 1-1) will meet for the fourth time in series history, all at Freedom Hall. Due to the pandemic, the teams played back-to-back at his one site in 2020-21, with the Knights sweeping the contest at home before the Owls captured last season’s matchup.
The previous three matches between the two teams have all ended with 7 or less points. Bellarmine won the first pair 73-67 and 62-60, and Kennesaw State beat him 72-65 in their most recent matchup.
Bellarmine has gone 3-3 at Freedom Hall this season, starting 3-0 at home, including a 60-40 win over Evansville, before facing formidable opponents in Louisville, Wofford and Murray State. 3 straight losses to
Kennesaw State earned its first ASUN victory on Thursday after beating Austin Pea 66-57 at home. In the game he had his change for the lead 12 times, but early in the fourth quarter he was on a 7–0 run and the Owls took the lead. KSU outscored his Govs 18-11 in the final stanza, with Lyndsey Whilby leading the Owls’ four double-digit scorers with his 17 points.
Jah’Che Whitfield is Kennesaw State’s leading scorer (14.1) and rebounder (5.2). Whilby (10.4) follows her in the scoring column. Amani Johnson leads his career in points (1,470), assists (554) and steals (230) during KSU’s Division I era. A graduate student who ranks third in the league in assists (5.2), she has been named to the ASUN All-Conference twice and won the 2018-19 ASUN Freshman of the Year award.
Bellamine is calling for a resilient effort after getting out of hand early on for the Knights in an 87-52 loss in North Alabama on Thursday. Bellarmine trailed him 20-5 after the first quarter and the Lions got away with the contest in the second period. The Knights have been plagued with injuries this season and continued to lead into the conference slate in quick succession by losing their starting senior forwards. cam browning.
freshman Gracie Markle Posted his fourth 20-point game of the season after scoring a game-high 20 points against Northern Alabama. The 6-foot-6 center shoots 7/9 and ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage (69.5). ASUN Freshman of the Week for her four times, she leads Belarumain in scoring (13.2), rebounding (9.3) and blocking her shots (2.6). Markle’s tally puts her second on the ASUN in rebounding and blocked shots, and 11th in scoring. With still quite a few games left, her total block of 39 ranks her 10th in show history 1 her season.
Bellarmine is ASUN’s second in blocks (4.9) and third in rebound margin (+4.0).
