Editor’s Note: This is the second in a series of articles covering the latest classes at the Edwardsville Athletic Hall of Fame.

After losing to eventual state champions East Moline United in the supersection round last season, the 2000 Edwardsville boys’ soccer team had one thing in mind.

“Many of us grew up together and were part of a select program at Metro United, which merged with Scott Gallagher. Stephen DeMauline was there to do one thing in a previous interview with Edwardsville Intelligence.

    The Tigers did just that.

Edwardsville won the program’s first state championship by defeating the No. 1 team in the country, Lincoln Way 4-1, in the Class AA state championship game in St. Charles.

Midfielder John Matthews said: “We weren’t supposed to win the championship game against Lincoln Way because they were the number one team in the country. We were beating them like crazy,” said midfielder John Matthews. “In those tournaments, everything had to go its way, and the momentum came from a two-time overtime victory over Boylan and Saturday morning’s semi-final match.”

The 2000 men’s soccer team will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the second re-charter class on February 4th at Sunset Hills Country Club.

Also inducted into the Hall of Fame are the 1990 baseball team and the 2004 women’s golf team, athletes Tom Price, Luke Kremalmeyer, Lindsay Anderson, Herman Shaw, Christina Perozzi, coaches Dick Garber and Winston Brown, and contributor Bob Wetzel. To do.

Players on the 2000 football team included DeMoulin, John Matthews, Andy Dawson, Dustin Pelate, Derek Pelate, Jason Winterbottom, Mike Modeer, Luke Kreamalmeyer, Adam Cooper, Eric Worthen, Adam Lanter, Ryan Luckett, Chris Garcia, Brandon Gayler , including Darrell Ballinger. , Jesus Verascoyne, Chas Warner, Ryan Neighbor, Rob Hattie, Justin Clay, Nathan Gibson, Miles McCoy Slentic, Todd Jernigan.

The team was coached by Mark Heiderscheid backed by John Ginestra.

It was Heiderscheidt’s first season as head coach of the Tigers. Since his inauguration in 2000, he has led the program to seven state appearances and his six state trophy wins, including the 2013 championship.

“We all grew up together and our coach Heiderscheidt was part of it. I remember him being at SIUE with our club team. He was one of our coaches, and when he took charge at Edwardsville, he took over a team that had high expectations.

“We already knew him and were happy to be with him. and the longevity of what he’s done since then speaks for itself.”

The 2000 state championship followed a 23-4-1 season in 1999 that ended in a 3-1 loss to East Moline United in the Collinsville Supersectional.

The Tigers went 18-3-1 in the 2000 regular season, beating Lincoln Way on penalty kicks in the championship game of the tournament outside Chicago. Their only losses were Granite City, Oakville and CBC.

After starting the postseason with two lopsided wins, Edwardsville defeated Quincy 2-0 after a 1-0 penalty-kick victory over Collinsville to advance to the Class AA State Tournament.

In the quarterfinals against Rockford Boylan, Desmoulins needed twice as many overtime goals for the Tigers to win 2–1.

“It was the biggest goal of my life, within 20 seconds of my second OT,” said DeMoulin. “It was a dead sprint from the 18-yard box at one end of the field to the goal at the other because I was chasing it for defense. I was able to catch up.”

Edwardsville advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-0 win over Aurora Warbonsey Valley. Kreamalmeyer scored his two goals, with Dustin Pelate and his Winterbottom each adding a goal.

In the championship game against top-ranked Lincoln Way, EHS scored a hat-trick from Kremalmeyer to win 4-1 and clinch the program’s first-ever provincial champions. This was his most goals scored by a single player in a Class AA State Championship, and his 6 goals in the tournament was also a record. Winterbottom also emerged victorious.

Kriemmalmeyer finished the season with a program-record 38 goals and 6 assists and was named a first-team All-American.

“It was unexpected and I had no idea it was going into the season,” said Kremalmeyer. “I knew we had enough teams to run in the states and that’s what I was focused on. It was a great realization and it was like the icing on the cake. .”

Joining Kreamalmeyer in double figures in goals for the season were 11 Vera score-ins and 10 Winterbottom. Cooper had nine goals, Lanter seven, and Desmoulins and Matthews five each.

Gaylor and Luckett starred in a defense that allowed just 19 goals this season

Gibson went 22-3-2 on goals with a 0.63 GAA and 115 saves. He finished the season with 16 shutouts.

Community members can visit the Edwardsville High School Athletics website (http://ecusd7.org/ehs/athletics/) to make nominations. The nomination form is done through Google Docs. A link will appear above the Sports/Schedule section.
