January 4 — RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The Rio Grande defeated IU Kokomo 71-68 on Tuesday in the River States Conference men’s basketball game between the division leaders.
The Red Storm pushed the East Division-leading record to 6-0. The Cougars still lead the West Division with him 5-1, but Midway’s 4-1 puts him close to IUK.
Hunter White led IUK with 30 points and 4 assists (11-5 overall). Darien Porch has 8 points and 7 rebounds.
The Rio Grande (12-4) competed in double digits with five players.
Rio Grande had a big advantage with a 3-point shot. Red He made 9 of 21 attempts for the Storm, while the Cougar made 3 of 20 for him.
In the women’s match, NAIA ranked No. 12 Rio Grande beat IUK 76-49. The Cougars trailed by just 1, 28-27, late in the first half before the Red Storm took a 40-27 halftime lead. Three quarters later, it was 58-39.
Freshman guard Ella Wolfe led IUK with 11 points (1-14 overall, RSC 1-5), while Araya Chapman added nine and Anna Kaiser added seven.
IUK will host Ohio Christian in the RSC doubleheader on Saturday. The women’s match starts at 1:00 pm and the men’s match starts at 3:00 pm.
RSC honors Hines
The RSC has named Xavier Hines Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 26-January. 1.
The senior forward from Noblesville averaged 16.0 points per game and shot 70% from the field in two games with the Cougars. He scored his 20 points off the bench and from 3-point range he put in a 6-10 performance as Mount Vernon narrowly lost to his Nazarene. He started the next game, going perfect 5-for-5 with two trays from the field and scoring 12 points in a win over Lawrence Tech.
