The son of Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson, Jacob Wilson is an expected first-round draft pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Jack Wilson played eight and a half major league seasons with the Pirates from 2001-2009. That same season, he earned a trip to the MLB All-Star Game and was named the NL Silver Slugger at the short position.
Like his father, Jacob Wilson is a shortstop. He attends Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Jacob will soon be in third grade. In 106 games, Jacob has a career batting average of .339, an on-base percentage of .400, 16 home runs and 94 RBIs. 358 batting average last season.
In the MLB Pipeline, he was picked 12th overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. MLB Pipeline considers him a “Top 10 Caliber Bat.”
Jacob is one of the big leaguers with Matt Holliday’s son Jackson Holliday, Andrew Jones’ son Drew Jones, Lou Collier’s son Cam Collier, and Al Leiter’s son Jack Leiter being drafted in the first round. Could be the newest son. 2021 and 2022 MLB Draft.
Jacob is from Thousand Oaks, California and attended Thousand Oaks High School, the same high school his father attended.
Jack Wilson joined the GCU coaching staff last summer as an assistant coach. He and Jacob are now reunited after Jack mentored Jacob at Thousand Oaks High School. From his 2017 to 2021 he was the head coach of the Thousand Oaks, going 98-30-1.
