Buffalo Bills Safety Dummer Hamlin is in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field during an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The emergency during Monday night’s game quickly erupted with congratulations from fans, commentators, and other players, bringing renewed attention to the dangers of the country’s most popular sport.
“Dummer Hamlin went into cardiac arrest following a hit against the Bengals. His heart rate recovered on the field and was transferred to UC Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment,” Bills said in a statement. says. “He is currently sedated and listed as in critical condition.”
The 24-year-old briefly got to his feet after making what appeared to be a routine tackle on Bengals’ Tee Higgins with 5:58 left in the first quarter, but lay on his back motionless.
According to ESPN, medical personnel performed CPR on Hamlin and gave him oxygen as he was loaded into an ambulance that was brought onto the field.
Players from both NFL teams were clearly shaken by what they witnessed and gathered around Hamlin during his treatment, with many kneeling in prayer and some crying.
“Tonight’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals has been postponed due to the collapse of Buffalo Bills forward Dumar Hamlin,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Bills did not immediately release a statement announcing details about Hamlin’s condition or the postponement, but tweeted:

American football, one of the most violent team sports, and its organization, the NFL, have faced growing concerns about concussions players are receiving on the field in recent years.
Injuries are common in sports, but some observers said it was the first time they had seen an ambulance enter the field to treat a player.

Former NFL player Drew Brees expressed his concerns about Hamlin on Twitter, saying Hamlin represents “all of us and all the teammates we’ve ever had.”
The NFL Players Association said it was in contact with players from both teams.
