The Mariners announced a number of off-roster Spring Training invitees this afternoon. Some of the people in the camp are rescuers Taylor Williams and catcher Brian O’Keeffemeaning that both signed minor league contracts to return to the organization.
Williams has played in 97 MLB games, split between four clubs. The right-hand man made it to the big leagues in Milwaukee and landed in Seattle for the 2020 campaign. He struck out 19 in 13 2/3 innings in his first month of the shortened season. As Seattle came out of playoff contention, they converted him to the Padres and won his then-prospect Matt BrushBlush quickly blossomed into a highly regarded talent and now appears to be an important part of the advancing Seattle relief force.
San Diego played just five games as Williams lost most of the 2021 season battling a knee injury. The Flyers fired him in September 2021, and after playing briefly with the Marlins and Giants organizations, he returned to the Mariners last summer via a minor league deal. The 31-year-old posted a 1.14 ERA in Triple-A Tacoma as he pitched 23 2/3 innings and scored a ground ball in his staggering 60% clip. He didn’t get an MLB appearance as the Mariners overloaded with bullpen depth, but he impressed the front office enough to get another crack this spring.
