Rafael “El General” Pedroza was named Fight of the Year in Panama after defeating previously undefeated Argentinian Hector Sosa in a 10-round decision at home. The seven commissioners and his seven boxing journalists reunited at Giorgio’s his restaurant in Panama City to choose the best of 2022.
Superfly Ronal Batista was named Prospect of the Year and cornerman Rigoberto Garibaldi was named Trainer of the Year.
Rousse Laguna’s company, Laguna Premium Boxing, was named Promoter of the Year.
Raul Cortizo Cohen was named Manager of the Year for 2022, and his one-of-a-kind fighter, Cuban Pablo Vicente, who won two fights of the year, took home major honors as Fighter of the Year.
All seven commissioners voted for Vicente, leading hometown Azael Villar to victory twice. One of them was his victory over former world champion Ryo Miyazaki in Round 1 in Osaka, Japan, by a brutal knockout.
It is the first time in Panama’s 105-year boxing history that a foreign fighter has won a major prize.
