The Los Angeles Dodgers have been plagued with injuries in the pitching department in 2022. Some were absent from time to time, others for long periods of time. Two key weapons, Walker his Buehler and Daniel Hudson, have missed much of his 2022 with serious injuries.
But there was good news when Los Angeles announced that Dustin May would be making his season debut later in the season. return.
The Dodgers and fans can’t wait to see what May has to offer this season. MLB insider Thomas Halligan believes May, 25, will need to step up in 2023 if LA is to have a chance at winning the world title in his series.
“Dustin May, RHP, Dodgers
May has already played in some of his four seasons (and two playoff appearances) with the Dodgers, but he has pitched less than 150 innings, partly due to Tommy John surgery in 2021. He struggled with control (4.2 BB/9) and posted a 4.50 ERA (94 ERA+) in 30 innings. But it’s hard not to be intrigued by his stuff, especially his nasty mix of curveballs and high-octane fastballs. May appeared headed for a breakout season before collapsing with an elbow injury in 2021, posting a 2.74 ERA, 13.7 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in five starts. Losing multiple key players to free agency this offseason, he could prove to be the X-factor for the Dodgers club lacking ace right-hander Walker Buehler (TJ surgery). “
May was one of eight players Harrigan picked to need to stay fit in 2023. I’m sure Dodgers fans can agree with this player.
LA’s 2016 draft selection has only pitched in 37 MLB games. However, his first “full” season came in 2020, pitching for the Dodgers throughout his championship run.
May injured his throwing arm early in the 2021 season and started only five games, going 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA. In August 2022, when he returned from TJ surgery, he went 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts in May. It was clear the 25-year-old was trying to find his groove, but now has a completely healthy offseason and a significant portion of him has left the organization. May will need to step up his game.
We expect a great 2023 for right-handed flamethrowers.
