‘The dumbest idea in sports history’: Chael Sonnen lashes out at Tyson Fury about his offer to fight ex-UFC star Francis Ngannou in a cage under boxing rules… heavyweight champion while accusing it of being a “beggar” for crossing the line
Tyson Fury calling Francis Ngannou to a cage fight under boxing rules has been called “the dumbest idea in sports history” by UFC analyst Chael Sonnen.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou, who was released from promotion earlier this month after failing to agree a new deal, received a unique offer from Fury over the weekend.
The pair flirted for a while with the idea of a crossover match, with Ngannou joining heavyweight boxing champions in the ring after knocking out Dillian White at Wembley Stadium last April.
In a recent interview with Seconds Out, Fury said: If you want to make some big boy money, come meet the Gipsy King and put up a big, big fight for the baddest midfielder on the planet.
Tyson Fury (L) has been slammed after calling Francis Ngannou (R) into a boxing fight in the cage.
Fury and Ngannou have had the idea for a unique crossover match for some time
Queensberry Cage, kick it spicy with 4 oz gloves [boxing rules], and let the best referees like “Iron” Mike Tyson. Did I sell it to the world?
One person Fury hasn’t pitched the idea to is Sonnen, who became obsessed with British fighters on his YouTube channel after hearing the details of his offer for Ngannou.
Sonnen, a former UFC title challenger turned pundit, claimed he was “surprised” to see one of the world’s leading boxers “beg” for a crossover fight.
“I saw Tyson Fury come out over the weekend and be the first to reveal what he was going to do with Francis.”They always said they were going to make a sport. They were trying to do something, but it was combat related.
Over the weekend, Gipsy King offered his MMA opponent a boxing match in a cage
But UFC analyst Chael Sonnen branded his proposal “the dumbest idea in sports history.”
Ngannou was released from the UFC earlier this month after failing to agree a new contract.
Francis offered to box.
“Tyson finally explained what they were. They’re going to fight in cages. I don’t know why. They’re going to fight in cages. They wear 4 oz gloves.” I don’t know why they wear 4 oz gloves, but that’s okay, then they follow the rules of boxing, it becomes the rules of Queensbury.
Sonnen continued, adding:
“You’re hot to go out and fight to get it yourself, and you have physical abilities that other men can only dream about, but you actually go out and get it yourself.” Man who doesn’t know how. They don’t know how.
“It was a surprise to see Tyson Fury begging, so I brought it to you.
“So Tyson gave us probably the dumbest idea in sports history. He knows it.
