The San Diego Padres have their scapegoat in manager Jayce Tingler after they ensured a losing season on Friday night.
The Padres will, in some way, surface with a losing record on the season. Sure, they were dealt a hard hand with injuries, however so was every MLB group. San Diegos lack of depth in the rotation and injuries in the bullpen ultimately dealt them a fatal blow they might not recover from.
It was that lack of depth, specifically, that need to cast doubt on general supervisor A.J. Prellers future. However it was a well-known secret that Tingler would be the first to go.
MLB expert Jon Heyman reported as much on Saturday afternoon:
” Jayce Tingler will be relieved of supervisory responsibilities by the Padres. Tingler is a strong baseball man who did a great job last season. But considering the groups lofty expectations and late-season collapse, this news was expected.”
Preller denied the report right away, but thats likely more due to timing than a change of mind.
” Per A.J. Preller, no decision has actually been made on Jayce (Tinglers) employment status at this time,” Dennis Lin, who covers the Padres for The Athletic, reported. ” Heymans report is entirely premature. He will be managing our video game today.”
Heymans report is just a bit early, though he could end up right in the long run.
So, with that in mind, exactly who should the Padres change Tingler with if hes fired?

” Jayce Tingler will be eased of managerial tasks by the Padres. Tingler is a strong baseball man who did an excellent task last season.
Padres: Could Buck Showalter replace Jayce Tingler?
When the Padres hired Tingler in 2019, recently-signed star Manny Machado asked the team to think about Showalter instead. The 2 had an excellent relationship in Baltimore during the Orioles brief playoff run, and hes the sort of no-nonsense supervisor that might fix a culture right away.
That being said, “no-nonsense” must be matched with a sound baseball mind, and Showalters bullpen management often left a lot to be desired. In San Diego, he d have plenty of arms to have fun with because pen, either avoiding that issue completely or making his failure because department all the more aggravating.
Showalter already has Machados vote, which assists. Manny wishes to be a leader in San Diego, and Showalter would ideally use him in that role.
