Christmas Day video games– including the New Orleans Pelicans vs. the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers vs. Denver Nuggets– averaged approximately 10% more audiences in 2020 compared to 2019. The NBA was a struck on social networks in the 2020 opening week, with ESPN saying there was “a 36% boost in video views and a 279% increase in minutes watched in this year’s opening week compared to opening week in 2019.” Much of the league’s success can be credited to the season’s start time. Given that the NBA changed its schedule to start in October, it’s struggled to compete with the MLB World Series and NFL fervor. Perhaps more importantly, the NBA has had a hard time in recent years to gain traction in global viewership– mainly in part due to geopolitical factors involving China. However this report is an excellent indicator that the league is heading in the ideal instructions.
